Exciting New Partnership with UNC Sports Medicine Institute to Support Our Athletes!
UNC Sports Medicine Institute Partners with NFL FLAG Flag Football Elite to Enhance Youth Flag Football Safety and Training in the Triangle
Chapel Hill, NC – June 27, 2025 – The UNC Sports Medicine Institute is partnering with NFL FLAG Flag Football Elite, a nonprofit founded by NFL Pro Bowler Cedric Peerman, to expand access to safe, skill-driven flag football for youth in the Triangle area. This collaboration uniquely combines UNC’s medical expertise with NFL FLAG’s elite-level coaching to reduce injury risks and promote athlete development.
Flag football is recognized for significantly lower injury rates compared to tackle football, making it a safer alternative for youth athletes. Additionally, flag football will debut as an Olympic sport at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, highlighting its rising popularity and competitive opportunities.
“As a League Operator, physician, and Vice President of the NFL Wives Association, I’m proud that our partnership brings together NFL-level experience and cutting-edge sports medicine,” said Hagar Elgendy, Physician, Vice President NFL Wives Association, and League Operator for NFL FLAG Flag Football Elite. “Our priority is creating a safe, fun, and inclusive environment where young athletes can develop skills and confidence while minimizing injury risks.”
“We are thrilled to collaborate with NFL FLAG Flag Football Elite to provide comprehensive injury prevention education and clinical support for young athletes,” said Dr. David Berkoff, Director, UNC Sports Medicine Institute. “Our shared mission is to promote safe participation in sports and help youth athletes reach their highest potential while prioritizing their health and well-being.”
This partnership will offer youth in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Chatham County, and nearby communities access to:
Clinically supported performance training
Injury prevention seminars led by UNC Sports Medicine experts
On-site recovery zones staffed by UNC professionals during games and events
Workshops and summer clinics for parents, athletes, and coaches on athlete wellness
Pathways to competitive flag football at regional and national levels
“Partnering with UNC Sports Medicine Institute strengthens our ability to keep athletes safe while pushing them to reach their potential,” said Cedric Peerman, NFL Pro Bowler and co-founder of NFL FLAG Flag Football Elite. “We believe every child deserves access to quality coaching and health education—this partnership makes that a reality for families in the Triangle.”
The collaboration officially launches this summer, with seasonal leagues now open for enrollment for the 2025 calendar year.
